Joanna Macy

  1. Ah, this reminds me so much of the documentary Esoteric Agenda. The Great Turning is something I am praying is a reality and that we can maybe turn everything around (somehow) before the Great Collapse. I read a lot of Derrick Jensen last year and I think that we are absolutely coming to a point of no return unless these ideas are a reality. My father believes in the collective consciousness so much that he thinks that when 2012 finally hits there will be such an intense shift that all our collective consciousness will disintegrate and we will have our own individual consciousness only, which to me is a kind of frightening idea. The way this woman presents things is very optimistic and I hope this is so.

  2. I think that what Joanna Macey has that Derrick Jensen does not have is an overall sense of hope and compassion. Jensen, to me, is doom and gloom (granted I haven't spent much time with his work, so perhaps it's different, but I can't get past how crummy I feel when I read his stuff), whereas Macey and others are more positive and optimistic. One thing Jensen has going for him, though, (as did Bush) was the scare tactic-- people act more if they are afraid than if they are happy and feel like, "Oh, things will sort out all right." So, I suppose, we mix the two up: heed the warnings of Jensen et al to stay motivated, but keep optimism closer to the surface so we have the endurance to change. This great Revolution (or perhaps we should say Evolution, because we do not want to revolve to the same spot) will probably go more quickly, though, because it's based on our survival and not on our gain.
