Week if 9/28/2009 Sensing in motion inquiry #4

Two sides of the coin. Where do you feel fluid and where do you feel restricted? What occurs as you observe this? Do these two themes interact in movement?

  1. I feel fluid in my arms and legs, and restricted in my hips and shoulders. I want my hips to be more free and loose but it is really difficult for me to get there. Of course these themes interact becuase both must be present, to be. One cannot be fluid without some restriction and the other way around.

  2. My hands feel light and agile like the wind; and my feet more like drops of falling rain. My neck and shoulders feel clumped together and tight as if balls of clay smashed into each other. And my chest and upper back more often like a couple sheets of plywood screwed together resting on the murky clay pond bottom of my belly and lower back. When I intensely dance and stretch or breath in meditation my body parts seem to loose such rigid distinction and integrate into a more coherent flow of energy. I practiced aikido today and became aware of how much energy I put into holding these tensions even during the simple act of standing still and centered. I felt awkward and unable to relax into and loosen them without moving; I felt distinctly aware of being a foreigner to my body. However I found that physical contact with other people and movement greatly relaxed my body and brought it into a more integrated flow.

  3. I have always felt varying degrees of tension in both my shoulders and my neck. As I observe this, I can feel my neck and shoulders tensing up even more. It seems that these tensions exist due to postural issues, particular due to my tendency to lift my shoulders and to lean my head partially forward at all times. Ever since I began training in the martial arts, I have always felt restriction in my left leg in regards to coordination, flexibility, and overall strength. I am a habitual jaw clincher and therefore, I constantly feel tension in the joints of my jaw. I find fluidity in my voice, arms, and abdomen. In addition, I have found that my movement becomes much more fluid when I'm listening to music. The pulse of the music seems to tune my body to move more gracefully and dispose of the restrictions that I tend to experience.

  4. My arms and my feet feel fluid, rarely experiencing pain or tension. I feel very restricted in my hips and upper back, especially between my shoulders. I often feel restricted all through my legs. Observing this feeling of restriction often tends to make me feel it more intensely, which is difficult, because I haven't yet found good tools to release it.

  5. I always feel free in my spine, arms, and shoulders. Once in awhile they may feel tense or tight, yet they yield and open with ease-especially to drum beats, dance music, and any movement that makes me feel quick and light. I feel stuck and tight in my right hip most of the time. My right leg is very strong, yet near my groin and oblique abdominal area I feel clogged, dammed up, snagged on something. Sometimes it aches and whines at me, screaming to be released so I can fly.

  6. So much restriction lately- with fall cam eall kinds of viral things to fight off and mental flurries of tasks and weather changes- so I am heightened in my restrictions and blessed by the fluidity of my hands and my sleep mostly- my dreams- we have motion and movement in those and that is the brain too- are dreams in the body? I am pretty sure I am sore from the baby pilates exercises too.

  7. the spot right between my shoulderblades, and that whole area across often feels restricted and tight, especially if i'm walking in a hurry. I also notice occasionally a restriction in my shoulders and upper arms, as well as my thighs, and usually when I notice this I can take some deep breaths and allow myself to relax a bit more. I feel the least restricted when I wake up in the morning, although waking up to an alarm puts my body into a sort of immediate urgent state for a moment until I can relax again. I also feel a nice fluidity in my body while I am bike-riding, as if every part is being used for something- pushing pedals, gripping handlebars, balancing.

  8. Fluidity of my body has taken on a new meaning. The outer most layers of my 'bodyshell' feels ever so soft and fluid--almost mushy and melting. Reflecting on this part of my experience is comforting and relaxing. I simply fall into it. But just a micro-inch deeper lies rigid muscles being pulled and restricted from many direction. Many of my larger joints take on most of the rigidity, possibly even compensating for my extra "mushiness". The rigidity pulls too much of my attention and I realize I need to work on my fluidity of mind in order to stay flexible on all levels.

  9. My limbs feel the most fluid out of any other place in my body. My core and mind feel extremely restricted at times. They feel more tense and clenched than my limbs. Throughout my limbs I can feel my energy flow out to the farthest tips, almost stretching them to new lengths. It is the very opposite in my core and mind. I am learning how to relax my mind, by calming my buzzing thoughts, and not having any responsibilities to dwell upon. It is only once and a while that I am truly successful at achieving a peaceful mind, and it usually happens only very late at night. I have not found a way to open up my tightly bound core. I am looking for a helpful way to free it while keeping it strong.

  10. I feel very restricted in all my body but didn't know it until this class. Isabelle pointed out to me that I cannot even relax my arm completely and it shocked her. I suppose I feel the most fluid (collectively) when I am dancing and am into it enough that I stop being self-conscious. These limited experiences are ones I treasure so much as I feel truly relaxed and truly at home in some abstract way.
