Inquiries Begin Next week, but here's two for the weekend.

“…The gorgeous simplicity of a body in space reacting to a musical instinct that has its roots in the very beginning of humankind.”
- Paula Citron, Globe & Mail

Inquiry 1.

As you do what you do through the weekend, I invite you to explore gravity (downwards motion):
a. While eating
b. while running/walking/biking
c. In the morning and at night
d. while playing

Inquiry 2.

As you do what you do through the weekend, I invite you to explore levity (upwards motion):
a. While eating
b. while running/walking/biking
c. In the morning and at night
d. while playing

Thanks for a very energetic first day!

  1. I don't know exactly how energy levels pertain to levity or gravity, but this weekend I took our routine of warming up before class and applied it each morning. I included meditation, yoga, mild strength training, and vocal callisthenics as part of my warm up. The twenty minutes spent warming up my body heightened my senses and increased my energy levels, in a sense that felt as if the energy was pulling my body up out of its habitual laziness (form of levity). This heightened sense of awareness accentuated the power of my movements. I had a stronger resistance to gravity's downward pull as my balance seemed to increase with higher energy levels (activity=sparring with a friend). I found an increased sense of levity as well (hitting a baseball farther and jumping higher for rebounds on the basketball court). Levity and gravity can aid and restrict movement. Energy acts to heighten the movement all together regardless of direction. (Though obvious, this is what I discovered this weekend) So warm up!

  2. I found it a bit difficult to get in touch with a sense of gravity or levity in my body; I'm aware that it's something that is easy to ignore the effect of, seeing as it's ever-present in affecting our bodies. I was working on noticing the simple things such as the pressure on the soles of my feet, the slight compression in my lower back, and the feeling of blood moving into my hands as they hang towards the ground.
